We are incredibly proud to be the first design agency to join The UK Plastics Pact, a trailblazing collaborative initiative led by sustainability experts, WRAP, to create a circular economy that keeps plastic in the economy and out of the natural environment.

By joining the Pact as a member, Pearlfisher is proud to be helping WRAP achieve its vision to create a world where plastic is valued and doesn’t pollute the environment. In doing so we are also cementing our own commitment to designing a future where packaging and waste have zero impact – something we brought to life at the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show with The Pearlfisher Garden.

The UK Plastics Pact is the first of a global network of such pacts – enabled by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy initiative – joining together the forces of brands, manufacturers, retailers, Governments, local authorities, NGOs and plastic producers to achieve 4 ambitious aims by 2025:

  • Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery models.
  • 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
  • 70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted
  • 30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging.

As Jonathan Ford, Founding Creative Partner & CEO, commented, “Our vision is completely aligned with that of WRAP, The UK Plastics Pact and their ambitious targets. At Pearlfisher, we are already driving a new philosophy and collaborative approach with our clients – Lightweighting – that isn’t just about making things lighter but is a tangible and actionable manifesto for brands that lays out how to use design to reduce their footprint across their entire lifecycle. Key to this is a new approach to plastic packaging that considers how to design brands on a spectrum from obsolescence to eternal life.

Design thinking and creativity will be crucial in solving the challenges we face and achieving the goals that WRAP has set out and we hope that our commitment to The Plastics Pact is a call to action to the whole design industry. Together, we can drive plastic inspiration and action, and start to turn the plastic tide.”

Marcus Gover, WRAP CEO, said: “We are delighted to have Pearlfisher join The UK Plastics Pact and benefit from their established track record as champions of sustainable design. Innovation and design will play a pivotal role in achieving The Pact’s aim to transform the plastics supply chain in the UK and keep plastic in the economy and out of the environment, and we are very much looking forward to working with Pearlfisher as we all push forwards towards 2025.”
