It was a brother and sister’s desire to bring traditional Japanese confectionery to the west that gave us Little Moons, and the mochi recipe that had been in their family’s bakery for years. Having hit the high notes of Whole Foods, Selfridges and Nobu in the UK, the pair turned to us to help them take the traditional delicacy – bite-sized gelato balls wrapped in doughy outer casings – into Europe.
Our creative idea was drawn from the product experience: a layered, sensorial journey that takes us from warm softness to cold sweetness within the same, savoured bite. Everything about mochi evokes the beautiful contrasts of Japan – specialness and sophistication, tradition and innovation, minimalism and imagination – and it was this unexpected, though effortless, coalescence of concepts that we aimed to capture in design.
Working to the design essence of ‘Unexpected Harmony’, we brought the whimsical world of Little Moons into an everyday premium space across identity, packaging, in-store brand development and point-of-sale design.
A hand-drawn crescent moon pattern, a nod to the brand’s symbolic name and the products’ delicate, hand-crafted nature, is central to the new look and feel, whilst the logo mark – simple and iconic, yet alluring and intriguing – places the product at the heart of the brand.
Staying true to the brand’s honest charm whilst elevating the product with contemporary desirability, we created a curious, culinary and creative world for Little Moons – sometimes quirky, sometimes refined, always wrapped in wonder.
