The Pearlfisher Garden

When the world’s drowning in ocean plastic, how do you turn the tide?

With the plastic problem one of the greatest global crises of our time - a staggering 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans – and an impenetrable default messaging reliant on negative imagery and guilt-tripping, the Pearlfisher Garden set out to challenge a rethinking of our consumption by visualizing the plight of a planet drowning in waste.

The Pearlfisher Garden

The Pearlfisher Garden drove home its crucial message through a stunningly unique, desirable and sustainable challenger design celebrating the largest garden in the world – the undersea garden of our great oceans – and showcased the dichotomy of the beauty and destruction present in our oceans.

A Gold award-winning entrant at the highly prestigious 2018 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Garden featured a series of below water level aquatic tanks to immerse visitors in an underwater world. The central feature of a 3D printed Pearl Diver sculpture - made from recycled PLA plastic - and the 500 recycled plastic water bottles decorating the boundary walls, highlighted how much plastic packaging is thrown into the oceans every 2.5 seconds and the effects of plastic preservation as the direct cause of our oceans’ demise. The Pearlfisher Garden has challenged perceptions on both an esthetic and intellectual level – a real and tangible call to action for people, brands, business and the design industry to commit to – and make – real sustainable change.
